Notes from the FMP Staff...
lot of local volunteers and officials deserve a pat on the back for the great job in helping to put on the Amgen Tour of California bicycle race. Nevada City did an excellent job in hosting the start of Stage One of the eight stage race. While the racing action wasn’t a long in terms of time spent in the Nevada City and Grass Valley, it was visually spectacular. The race brought thousand of people to the area and a bit of positive national exposure can never be bad for business. Hope Amgen was impressed and they come back again next year. More biking excitement is on the way with the Nevada City Bike Classic on Father’s Day weekend. Congratulations to Penn Valley lawyer Michael Colantuono who has been named the Public Lawyer of the Year by the California State Bar’s Public law Section. He will receive his honor at the State Bar’s Annual Meeting in Monterey in late September. The Nevada County Fairgrounds is seeking nominations
A
for the 2010 Fair Family of the Year. Each year a family is recognized at the Nevada County Fair, and this year the Fairgrounds is asking the community for help in nominating a family for this special award. The Fair is looking for a family who is very involved with the Fair, either through exhibiting or volunteering, and passionate about the Fair. If you’d like to nominate a family, please submit a one page summary of why you think the family of your choice deserves recognition. The family chosen will be honored at opening ceremonies of the Nevada County Fair, and will also receive daily admission to the Fair, a season parking pass, ride coupons, and a family portrait from Schaffer’s Originals of Grass Valley. Submit your nomination no later than June 15, 2010 to reply@NevadaCountyFair.com or mail it to the Nevada County Fairgrounds at P.O. Box 2687, Grass Valley, CA 95945. The United Way of Nevada County’s 3rd annual Penny Pitch is coming up on Saturday June 19th. This will give you a chance to re-experience the childhood game of pitching pennies. The event will starts at 11:30am, with pennies being pitched beginning at 1:00pm until 6:00pm at Kane’s Fine Food Restaurant at 120 E. Main St. in Grass Valley. A penny pitch is a competition in which an individual or teams throw (pitch) pennies against a wall to see who can land the penny the closest to the wall. Normally the winner keeps all of the pennies, but In this case, The United Way of Nevada County wins it all! For more information or to register visit www.pennypitch-nevadacounty.com. For more information on United Way of Nevada County, please call 27484-111 or visit www.uwnc.org . The next issue of the Foothills Marketplace will be arriving in your mailbox on June 24th. he Penn Valley Rodeo Grounds will be the scene for some of the State’s top barbeque cookers and some of the country’s fastest guns. The 2nd Annual Smokin’ in the Oaks BBQ Cook-off will take place Saturday and Sunday, June 5th and 6th in Penn Valley. Sponsored by the Penn Valley Rodeo Association, this year competition will feature over 25 teams competing for cash and prizes. But the real winners are those attending who get to literally get a taste of the competition by walking through “BBQ Alley” and sampling the food. Full BBQ meals will also be available, for a cost, at the cook shack along with other concession items. A beer tent will be in operation with live music. BBQ cookers will be grilling up chicken, ribs, pulled pork and brisket for judging. Awards will be given out for divisions with a Grand and Reserve Grand Champion being crowned. Rick’s Righteous Ribs (pictured) from San Jose, is scheduled to defend their championship. On Sunday, there will also be a local “Back Yard BBQ” contest in search for Nevada County’s best trip-tip cook. New this year is the Fast Draw event featuring quick draw shooters competing for cash and the champions belt buckle. The Cowboy Mounted Shooting competition is also part of this year’s festivities. Competitors on horseback ride through a course in the rodeo grounds showing their shooting and horsemanship skills. Both shooting competitions will take place Saturday and Sunday. Admission to both days of competition is one canned food item, per person, per day. All food collected will be donated to the Nevada County Food Bank. This includes the shooting competitions. There will be a charge for concessions. For more information visit

What is Burton Homestead?
Burton Homestead is a 38 acre parcel located two miles from Nevada City. Mrs. Burton gave the Land Trust a gift deed with a reserved life estate meaning that the owner will live out her life on the property, after which the property will convert to free title ownership by the Land Trust. Following the wishes and instructions of Mrs. Burton, the Land Trust plans to maintain existing trails and roads for future access and will establish a neighborhood park and children education center and trails where leashed dogs can be walked. The property, which is covered in oaks, tall pines, ponds, meadows and Native American bedrock mortars. Future plans include establishing a museum and science center featuring native flora and fauna in one of the property’s existing structures; but aside from that, the property will be left essentially untouched.

Tickets are $10.00 and are available at Briar Patch, The Bookseller, Nevada City Postal and at the event. June 27: Rough and Ready Secession Days. On April 7, 1850, the town of Rough and Ready, angered at the lack of law and order, and the passage of a new mining tax, voted to secede from the Union and form the Great Republic of Rough and Ready. The Republic lasted less than 3 months when, the story goes, Nevada City refused to sell the “foreign” miners liquor! The town gathered again and decided to re-join the Union...just in time for the 4th of July celebration. Secession Days will feature food, fun and entertainment from 9:00am to 3:00pm. A Pancake Breakfast helps to raise funds for the Rough and Ready Volunteer Fire Department. Their will be vendor booths, the town blacksmith will have a demonstration, and the Fruit Jar Pickers play their special brand of music. A highlight is the annual musical/melodrama “The Saga of Rough and Ready” performed live on stage by the locals. There will also be Rough and Ready souvenir sales, a petting zoo, raffles, an antique car parade, and concessions. To learn more visit www.roughandreadychamber.com.

Grass Valley roundabout gets artsy
T
he roundabout at the intersection of IdahoMaryland Road and East Main Street now has a finished look with the recent addition of art. The center piece is the work of Grass Valley resident Kurt Steger. The sculpture is a combination of con-
crete, timber and metal, including gears and wheels. The eight sided art piece is designed as a cross in a circle and portrays the area’s Native American, timber and mining history. The art piece was financed by the Grass Valley City Council.

Tips for a safe and fun summer road trip
S
ummer is the perfect time to hit the road and discover new back roads in our area, state or across our nation. A little planning and preparation will make your road trip even better.
tions. If you’re not able to stay with friends and
family along your route, it is recommended you make hotel or campground reservations in advance. Also, research what each company’s policy is for late check-ins or canceled reservations in case you get delayed by weather or road construction.
Plan your route. One of the most exciting parts
of a summer road trip is the planning stage. By getting everyone involved, you can ensure that everyone gets to visit the stops they want to see along the way. If you’re planning a cross country trip and are looking to see places off the beaten path, try one of the scenic byways listed on www.byways.org. If you’re staying in state, try www.ca.gov and click on the Tourism and Recreation button for some great vacation ideas that our state has to offer.
Perform maintenance on your vehicle.
Have your vehicle, RV or travel trailer well inspected and serviced before you leave. Check fluid levels, belts, fans, hoses, filters, tires and brakes. Make sure your spare tire is usable and if you’ll be traveling over a lot of rough, gravel roads consider taking along more than one spare tire.
Pack the vehicle for safety and fun. To Book reservations for your accommodaSERVICE WHILE YOU WAIT!

Funky band is afraid to mine. The band plays a variety of 60s-era styles including psychedelic, rock, soul, British Invasion, and yes even a little disco when the urge hits. It culls from a master list of nearly 75 songs that includes both “stuck in the head” popular and “kinda remember it from a party” obscure. And the gang always brings a few new songs to every show. The Hippie Dance Party is a fundraiser for the Center. The band was donated by former board member Chris Hawthorne and his wife Bonnie who won the combo at an auction for the Gold Country Kiwanis. In the last decade, the now 73-yearold performer has been on a vigorous schedule of international solo appearances. Kristofferson says, “I was overseas doing a film when I got the opportunity to work in Ireland, and I didn’t have time to martial the troops. So I went out by myself, and it worked. I’ve been really surprised at selling out the shows everywhere. People are filling up the houses. Something was making a direct communication with the audience,” he adds, “and I guess it must be down to the essence of the songs. Because God knows, there’s better guitar players and singers. But it seems to be working with my material — just me and the song.” Showtime: Saturday, June 26, 8:00pm Place: Veterans Memorial Hall Tickets: $45.00 General Admission $65.00 VIP includes reserve seating, parking and one drink
