Notes from the FMP Staff...
he days of free parking at major, outdoor events at the Nevada County Fairgrounds are over. In the past only three fairgrounds sponsored events had charged parking fees: the Nevada County Fair, Draft Horse Classic, and Country Faire Christmas. Due to declining revenues and the need to upgrade a deteriorating infrastructure, a $5.00 parking fee is now in effect for all vehicles at large outdoor events, such as Music in the Mountains. The new parking fee is not the idea of local fairground officials but the State of California (17th District Agricultural Association) which owns and operates the facility. Basically, the State’s money problem is also the Nevada County Fairground’s money problem. Full time employees also take part in the State’s monthly three furlough days which are scheduled so as not to occur during fairground events. The Nevada County Relay for Life is coming up quickly. This year’s 24-hour event begins at 10:00am on Saturday, May 24th at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. They are still looking for teams or individuals looking to join a team. Great cause, but also a great time! Call Rona at 2725378 for information.
Empire Mine State Park from being closed due to the State’s budget woes. According to a press release from The Nevada County Economic Resource Council (ERC), in March the group received an inaugural State Parks Grassroots Champion Award from the California State Parks Foundation for its efforts to protect and advocate for California’s state parks in 2009. The volunteer efforts resulted in a total of 7,244 signatures gathered and delivered to Governor Schwarzenegger, California State Senator Sam Aanestad, and California Assemblyman Dan Logue in Sacramento just five days before the State budget was signed. To learn more about the work of the Nevada County ERC visit their web site at www.ncerc.org. Speaking of the Empire Mine, their Annual “Spring Time at the Empire Mine” event is happening on Saturday, May 8th. See page 10 for more details. Bring your camera as the gardens should be in full bloom. The Friends of Hospice “Pave the Way” campaign is still in progress. For a $100.00 donation a paving brick is etched with the name designated by the donor. The paving bricks line the entry way to the Hospice facility located off Rough and Ready Highway in Grass Valley. These pavers are a lasting reminder of not only those we love but also of celebrations and accomplishments. They are heartwarming messages and remembrances and a wonderful way to support a very worthy group of volunteers. For further information or questions please call Suzanne Reese, 530-4323689.

Empire Mine Spring Tour
T
he annual Spring Time at Empire Mine State Park is Saturday, May 8th from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Activities will include living history presentations in the Bourn Cottage, Mine Yard and Clubhouse. In the “cottage”, volunteers will be dressed in period costumes and will recreate characters from the Empire Mine’s colorful past. There will also be live music throughout the day. Mr. & Mrs. Bourn and their guests will greet you and speak to you as if you were visiting in the year 1905. In the mine yard, volunteers portray workers of the past and enact a working day at the mine. You will also meet the office staff and other mine workers, see and hear working machinery, smell the blacksmiths burning coal, and feel the coolness of the mineshaft. The gardens should be blooming and you will have the opportunity
to purchase heirloom plants propagated in the mine’s greenhouses. Children will have the fun of decorating a potted plant for a Mother’s Day gift. All proceeds benefit the Empire Mine Park Association in its ongoing programs to restore the historic buildings and grounds and to enhance educational opportunities at the Park. Admission is $5.00 for adults 17 and over, $3.00 for children 6 to 16 and free admission for those under 6 years. The Empire Mine is located at 10791 East Empire Street in Grass Valley. For more information on this event and the Empire Mine, visit www.empiremine.org.

ravel is on the rise as the economy slowly recovers, with Americans logging an increase of 6.6 million miles during 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. As this travel trend is expected to continue, it is essential that drivers take the proper steps to help their vehicles remain durable and to get the most from what may be their second largest investment. “My entire career has been about keeping cars running strong in some of the most severe conditions,” says Alan Gustafson, crew chief of veteran NASCAR driver Mark Martin’s No. 5 car. “Making your vehicle last is more important than ever these days. Gustafson recommends a few simple checklist items to help keep your car running at optimal performance: Motor oil is a must: Drivers need to protect their vehicles with a quality motor oil to endure the varying temperatures as we experience. Clean your fuel system: Many drivers use a fuel system cleaner as gunk and deposits collect in the fuel system. Fuel system cleaners are designed to help clean the combustion chamber, fuel injectors/carburetors, intake valves and ports of an engine, which can help maximize fuel economy and engine performance. Community Action is their game
U
nited Way of Nevada County’s Day of Action (UWNC) is Thursday, May 6th. This is a group effort with UWNC teaming up with Nevada County’s business community and many youth volunteers. It is a day set aside for employees and people of all ages to work at one of United Way of Nevada County’s partner agencies or other health & human service non-profits. Many projects will be accomplished on this day of collaboration, as demonstrated by the photo of JC Penny employees helping to clean up a garden area in 2009. Projects such as painting, weeding, replacing floors, and filing papers will all be a part of community involvement. If you or your business would like to get involved call the United Way of Nevada County at 274-8111 or email admin@uwnc.org.

The concert will feature her bestknown, classic songs plus new songs from her latest release “The Loving Kind”. From Austin’s Hole In the Wall bar to New York’s Carnegie Hall, Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry to London’s Royal Albert Hall, Griffith has entertained worldwide audiences. features an ensemble cast of 21 local actors and a 15piece theatre orchestra. Inspired by the timeless tales of the Brothers Grimm, “Into the Woods” tells the story of a Baker and his Wife who journey into the Woods on a quest to lift a witch’s curse. On the way, they cross paths with Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of Beanstalk fame), Rapunzel, Cinderella and other fairy tale characters. They each pursue individual wishes until their stories become entangled in unexpected ways - revealing what happens after “happily ever after.” The play is one of Sondheim’s most accessible works, appealing to audiences young, age 12 and above, and old. For ticket and show time information, visit www.thecenterforthearts.org or call 274-8384. May 7: Laurie Lewis & Nina Gerber Rita Hosking & Cousin Jack, Miners Foundry. Laurie Lewis’s 30-year career includes a Grammy Award for 1997’s “True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe,” as well as twice being named Female Vocalist of the Year by the IBMA. Rita Hosking & Cousin Jack country folk songs tell about kitchen tables, springs, loss, miners, mountains, culture clash, trailers, stray dogs, loggers, hope, forest fires and more (just in case you thought all the subjects were covered in the preceding song subject list). Her delivery has been described as intense. For ticket and show time information, visit www.minersfoundry.org or call 265-5040. May 15: Antsy McClain & the Trailer Park Troubadours benefit concert, Grass Valley Veterans Hall. This concert is a benefit for the Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Coalition. Antsy McClain & the Trailer Park Troubadours have been called a “rising star” by the London Times and “one of America’s greatest poets” by Tommy Smothers. Their music has been featured in motion pictures, on television and international radio, including NPR’s “All Things Considered”. Past Nevada County appearances have sold out. Proceeds from the concert go directly to serve domestic violence and sexual assault survivors as well as support prevention efforts in the community. With the recent loss of California state funds, the DVSAC is looking to partnering closer with the community and individuals to rebuild the shelter program for domestic violence victims. This concert is the first step in raising funds to re-open a shelter. There will be a no-host bar and a live auction at intermission. Tickets available at www.dvsac.org or by calling (530)272-2046. Loudon Wainwright gained national fame in 1972 singing about a “Dead Skunk (in the Middle of the Road)” and for being the singing surgeon Captain Calvin Spalding on the television show M*A*S*H. His musical career began in the late ‘60s and it continues today as he writes and sings songs about his personal experiences. Some call it “confessional poetry”. His performances many times finds him pulling the rug out from under
his own pretensions and sticking his tongue out at the audience as well as himself. Wainwright has recorded over twenty albums on eleven different labels. Two of his albums have been nominated for Grammy Awards for “I’m Alright” (1985) and “More Love Songs” (1986). In January of this year, Wainwright won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. Wainwright has also appeared in a number of films, including small parts in “The Aviator”, “Big Fish”, “Elizabethtown”, “The 40-YearOld Virgin”, “Knocked Up”, which he also wrote the music soundtrack with Joe Henry, and the television series, “Undeclared”.

Tires should be checked monthly to make sure that they are inflated to manufacturers’ recommendations, which can typically be found on the vehicle door placard or in the glove box.
If you or your business would like to get involved call the United Way of Nevada County at 274-8111 or email admin@uwnc.org.

features an ensemble cast of 21 local actors and a 15piece theatre orchestra.
