Fair Christmas Faire celebrates 25th year
T
he holiday shopping seasons gets its official kickoff with the County Christmas Faire at the Nevada County Fair Grounds on Friday, November 27th through Sunday, November 28th. Five exhibit buildings will be packed full of Christmas gift ideas with items such as hand made jewelry, wooden crafts, ornaments, stained glass, candles, wreaths, beadwork, and other unique items being offered by over 100 artisans. The Faire also will feature live entertainment by the Victorian singers, bell ringing
by the RiverBells (pictured), and the Sierra Symphony quartet. There will be wagon rides around the Fairgrounds, food, and the always popular Gingerbread House exhibit. Once again, Mr. and Mrs. Claus have cleared their busy schedule to make their appearance at the Faire with a photographer available to capture your children sharing their Christmas wishes. Babysitting services will be available. Admission to the Country Christmas Faire is $4.00 for adults with children 12 and under admitted free. There is no charge for parking. Fair hours are Friday and Saturday 10:00am to 5:00pm with Sunday hours 10:00am to 4:00pm. This year the Nevada County
Fairgrounds, the Food Bank of Nevada County, and HOPE (Help Other People Eat) have teamed up for a canned food drive. Bring a canned food item to Sunday’s Faire and receive $1.00 off your Sunday admission. For more information about the Nevada County Faire visit www.nevadacountyfair.com.

The Cornish holiday spirit comes to Grass Valley

How some Christmas traditions may have started
T
he Christmas Tree. A form of Christmas trees began in 16th century Germany with fir trees decorated, both indoors and out, with apples, roses, gilded candies, and colored paper. In a popular play depicting the story of Adam and Eve, a fir tree hung with apples was used to symbolize the Garden of Eden. The play ended with the prophecy of a savior coming, so was often performed during the Advent season. It is believed Protestant reformer Martin Luther first adorned trees with light. While coming home one December evening, the beauty of the
stars shining through the branches of a fir inspired him to recreate the effect by placing candles on the branches of a small fir tree inside his home. The Christmas tree was brought to England by Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert from his native Germany. An etching in 1848, featuring the Royal Family gathered around a Christmas tree in Windsor Castle, popularized the tree throughout Victorian England. Brought to America by the Pennsylvania Germans, the Christmas tree became an American tradition by the late 19th century. The Christmas Stocking. According to legend, a kind-
ly nobleman grew despondent over the death of his beloved wife and foolishly squandered his fortune. This left his three young daughters without dowries. The generous St. Nicholas, hearing of the girls’ plight, set forth to help. He rode his white horse by the nobleman’s house and threw three small pouches of gold coins down the chimney where they were captured by the stockings the young women had hung by the fireplace to dry. Mistletoe. Used by Druid priests 200 years before the birth of Christ in their winter celebrations, the plant was revered since it had no roots yet remained green during the cold months of win-

A form of the Christmas card began in England first when young boys practiced their writing skills by creating Christmas greetings for their parents, but it is Sir Henry Cole who is credited with creating the first real Christmas card. In 1843 Sir Henry found himself too busy during the Christmas season to compose individual Christmas greetings for his friends. He commissioned an artist for the illustration. The card featured three panels, with the center panel depicting a family enjoying Christmas festivities and the card was inscribed with the message “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You.”

The ownership is made up of family members who lend a hand in the daily operations from seating and serving you to cooking your meal. This fund raising event will feature three area homes in which you will be able to view a selection of decorated Christmas Trees. Tours will take place from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Tickets are $15.00 and include refreshments. In addition to the tour, raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at five for $5.00. These tickets will give you a chance to win a fully lighted, decorated Christmas tree, a basket of Egyptian ornaments or a treasure chest of Christmas tree ornaments. riends of Hospice and the Cool Hollow 4-H of Nevada County have partnered up to present the Tree of Love. For the past 20 years the 4-H has displayed a 20-foot holiday tree in the Rood Center. The goal is to have the tree become adorned with thousands of Tree of Love paper ornaments which help to raise funds for the Friends of Hospice. This is an annual fundraiser for the volunteer group who have already mailed out invitations to donate. The mailed invitations include a Tree of Love paper ornament. For each $10.00 donation received an ornament will be hung on the tree with a name and special message written on the back of the ornament honoring a loved one. Donors of $100.00 or more will receive a special keepsake ornament. If you did not receive an invitation and would like to donate to the Tree of Love, call Friends of Hospice at 274-5121. The Tree of Love will be on display in the Rood Center lobby, 950 Maidu Avenue in Nevada City, beginning December 4th. Friends of Hospice is a registered 501(c)3 non profit, all volunteer organization whose main purpose is to fund raise for Hospice of the Foothills. More information about Friends of Hospice and Hospice of the Foothills can be obtained at www.hofo.org.

Fair Christmas Faire celebrates 25th year
T
he holiday shopping seasons gets its official kickoff with the County Christmas Faire at the Nevada County Fair Grounds on Friday, November 27th through Sunday, November 28th. Five exhibit buildings will be packed full of Christmas gift ideas with items such as hand made jewelry, wooden crafts, ornaments, stained glass, candles, wreaths, beadwork, and other unique items being offered by over 100 artisans. The Faire also will feature live entertainment by the Victorian singers, bell ringing
by the RiverBells (pictured), and the Sierra Symphony quartet. There will be wagon rides around the Fairgrounds, food, and the always popular Gingerbread House exhibit. Once again, Mr. and Mrs. Claus have cleared their busy schedule to make their appearance at the Faire with a photographer available to capture your children sharing their Christmas wishes. Babysitting services will be available. Admission to the Country Christmas Faire is $4.00 for adults with children 12 and under admitted free. There is no charge for parking. Fair hours are Friday and Saturday 10:00am to 5:00pm with Sunday hours 10:00am to 4:00pm. This year the Nevada County
Fairgrounds, the Food Bank of Nevada County, and HOPE (Help Other People Eat) have teamed up for a canned food drive. Bring a canned food item to Sunday’s Faire and receive $1.00 off your Sunday admission. For more information about the Nevada County Faire visit www.nevadacountyfair.com.

The Cornish holiday spirit comes to Grass Valley

How some Christmas traditions may have started
T
he Christmas Tree. A form of Christmas trees began in 16th century Germany with fir trees decorated, both indoors and out, with apples, roses, gilded candies, and colored paper. In a popular play depicting the story of Adam and Eve, a fir tree hung with apples was used to symbolize the Garden of Eden. The play ended with the prophecy of a savior coming, so was often performed during the Advent season. It is believed Protestant reformer Martin Luther first adorned trees with light. While coming home one December evening, the beauty of the
stars shining through the branches of a fir inspired him to recreate the effect by placing candles on the branches of a small fir tree inside his home. The Christmas tree was brought to England by Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert from his native Germany. An etching in 1848, featuring the Royal Family gathered around a Christmas tree in Windsor Castle, popularized the tree throughout Victorian England. Brought to America by the Pennsylvania Germans, the Christmas tree became an American tradition by the late 19th century. The Christmas Stocking. According to legend, a kind-
ly nobleman grew despondent over the death of his beloved wife and foolishly squandered his fortune. This left his three young daughters without dowries. The generous St. Nicholas, hearing of the girls’ plight, set forth to help. He rode his white horse by the nobleman’s house and threw three small pouches of gold coins down the chimney where they were captured by the stockings the young women had hung by the fireplace to dry. Mistletoe. Used by Druid priests 200 years before the birth of Christ in their winter celebrations, the plant was revered since it had no roots yet remained green during the cold months of win-

The card featured three panels, with the center panel depicting a family enjoying Christmas festivities and the card was inscribed with the message “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You.”

riends of Hospice and the Cool Hollow 4-H of Nevada County have partnered up to present the Tree of Love. For the past 20 years the 4-H has displayed a 20-foot holiday tree in the Rood Center. The goal is to have the tree become adorned with thousands of Tree of Love paper ornaments which help to raise funds for the Friends of Hospice. This is an annual fundraiser for the volunteer group who have already mailed out invitations to donate. The mailed invitations include a Tree of Love paper ornament. For each $10.00 donation received an ornament will be hung on the tree with a name and special message written on the back of the ornament honoring a loved one. Donors of $100.00 or more will receive a special keepsake ornament. If you did not receive an invitation and would like to donate to the Tree of Love, call Friends of Hospice at 274-5121. The Tree of Love will be on display in the Rood Center lobby, 950 Maidu Avenue in Nevada City, beginning December 4th. Friends of Hospice is a registered 501(c)3 non profit, all volunteer organization whose main purpose is to fund raise for Hospice of the Foothills.
