BETTER QUALITY. BETTER SLEEP. BETTER LIFE.

Two tom turkeys seem to be joisting for territorial rights on the fence that is part of the farm located within the community of Lake Wildwood. There again, maybe they are having a rather animated discussion on how to lay low until after Thanksgiving diner has been served.

The Holiday season is right around the corner
Hard to believe but the holiday season is fast approaching. Many organizations and volunteers are already sprinting to the finish line in preparing for a festive foothills holiday season. Two of the most well know events in the area are Cornish Christmas in downtown Grass Valley and Victorian Christmas in Nevada City. Both events are not only local favorites but also bring many visitors into the area for a dose of holiday cheer as well as a unique, some would say, old fashion way of shopping for gift items. No malls, no box stores, just you and your neighbors outdoors sharing the holiday spirit. This years Cornish Christmas will take place on Friday’s beginning November 27th and continue each Friday until December 18th from 6:00pm until 9:00pm. There is no admission to the event which takes place on Mill Street and West Main in downtown Grass Valley. Most downtown businesses will be open as well as many street vendors will have goods for sale. Restaurants and food concessions will also be available. More information can be obtained by visiting www.historicgrassvalley.com or calling 272-8315.

“Fall Back” in time on November 1st
On Sunday, November 1st it will be time to ‘fall back” to Pacific Standard Time as daylight savings time will come to an end. In other words, your Halloween weekend will be one hour longer as you set your clock back one hour. History of Daylight Time in the U.S. Although standard time in time zones was instituted in the U.S. and Canada by the railroads in 1883, it was not established in U.S. law until the Act of March 19, 1918, sometimes called the Standard Time Act. The act also established daylight saving time, a contentious idea then. Daylight saving time was repealed in 1919, but standard time in time zones remained in law. Daylight time became a local matter. It was reestablished nationally early in World War II, and was continuously observed from February 9, 1942 to September 30, 1945. After the war its use varied among states and localities. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 provided standardization in the dates of beginning and end of daylight time in the U.S. but allowed for local exemptions from its observance. Arizona, with the exception of the Navajo Nation, and Hawaii are the only states that put daylight savings time into effect. Also the American territories of American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Island stay on standard time all year round. The Act provided that daylight savings time begin on the last Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday in October, with the changeover to occur at 2 a.m. local time. During the “energy crisis” years, Congress enacted earlier starting dates for daylight time. In 1974, daylight time began on January 6th and in 1975 it began on February 23rd. After those two years the starting date reverted back to the last Sunday in April. In 1986, a law was passed that shifted the starting date of daylight time to the first Sunday
in April, beginning in 1987. The ending date of daylight time was not subject to such changes, and remained the last Sunday in October. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 changed both the starting and ending dates. Beginning in 2007, daylight time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

Nov 5 - 15: Aladdin, a spectacular family musical will be presented at the Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. Mila Johansen has taken this age old tale that is centuries old and adapted it into a humorous, fast paced musical. Johansen collaborated with local composer Darryl Stines. A preview performance will be presented Thursday, November 5th at 7:00pm. All tickets are $5.00. Regular performances will run on Friday nights at 7:00pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00pm. Tickets are $8.00 for adults, students and seniors are $6.00 with children 12 and under tickets priced at $5.00. Visit www.centerforthearts.com for more information. Nov 7: Shabaz featuring Sukhawat Ali Khan and Riffat Sultana. Shabaz is brother-sister singing duo Sukhawat Ali Khan and Riffat Sultana along with producer/guitarist Richard Michos. This innovative band is based in the Bay Area but has a sound straight out of the Indian Sub-Continent. Both siblings were trained in North Indian Classical and Sufi singing. Their voices complement each other perfectly, at times becoming indistinguishable. This makes perfect sense when one considers that the two singers have been studying and singing together since childhood. One performance only, at 8:00pm at the Center for the Arts with tickets priced at $20.00 Nov 12 - 14: “She Loves Me”. The Sierra Stages concludes their Broadway in Concert series with the romantic comedy She Loves Me, a story of two lovesick pen-pals who work together by day, unaware that they are writing to each other by night. Based on the play that inspired the films The Shop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail, She Loves Me has delighted critics and audiences alike who have called it “the perfect Broadway musical”. A special preview performance will take place Thursday at 7:00pm with a Friday performance at 8:00pm with two performances on Saturday at 2:00pm and 8:00pm. Tickets are $15.00 to $20.00. Sierra Stages Community Theater is located at the Miners Foundry, 325 Spring Street in Nevada City. For more information, visit www.sierrastages.org.

Nov 14: The Edlos. Known as the bad boys of accapella The Edlos claim to be from Planet A, which circles the star Cappella. If The Edlo’s sense of humor is any indication, it’s probably true. One thing is for sure: when they take the stage, this quartet of unaccompanied singers never fail to transport entire audiences with their unique combination of outrageous gags and impeccable musicality, post-modern dynamics, and inventive vocal arrangements of everything from Gregorian chants to the songs of the Beach Boys as well as bizarre originals like those found on their new ‘60s album, Retropella. One performance only at 7:00pm at the Center for the Arts with tickets priced at $20.00 advance and $23.00 at the door. Nov 15: The Enso String Quartet. Twin Cities Concert Associates presents these young musicians who combine extraordinary talent with enthusiasm and momentum that gives their performance an energy that is rarely matched. The
concert will take place at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 12889 Osborne Hill Drive, Grass Valley. Tickets are $18.00. For information, visit www.tcca.net. Nov 20: The DeanO-Holics. Winners of the National Rising Star award in 2007 and 2008, this Dean Martin/Frank Sinatra tribute band will bring back great musical memories of the leaders of the famous “Rat Pack”. One performance Friday at 8:00pm at the Center for the Arts with tickets priced at $20.00 advanced, $25.00 at the door. There is also special VIP tickets priced at $35.00. well known for his exciting live performances, having toured in the 1980’s with John Lee Hooker’s Coast to Coast Blues Band and then with his own group The Delta Rhythm Kings since 1986. One performance only at 8:00pm at the Center for the Arts with tickets priced at $20.00. Nov 22: Jazz Pianist Mose Allison. Mose Allison returns to the Center for the Arts for another night showcasing his unique musical style, the fusion of rustic blues and jazz, embellished with profound and often humorous lyrics. As a pianist he learned from composers such as Bartok, Ives, Hindemith and Ruggles. The fusing of these diverse elements into a cohesive performance continues today. Mose continues to write and perform all over the world. His songs have been covered by Van Morrison, John Mayall, The Who, The Clash, Eric Clapton, the Yardbirds, Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt to name a few.
